Olive leaf - Effective Antiviral

Olive Leaf Extract is effective against viral infections.

Viruses dominate much of our health care concerns. Antibiotic wonder drugs are not effective against viruses. The common cold, flu, herpes and HIV are all viral illnesses. And Olive leaf has been shown to be effective against each. The recent studies about Olive leaf and HIV are important since this herb has none of the side effects of the most commonly used antiviral drugs. Some health care professionals are integrating it into thecare of those with HIV infection.

An ancient plant, the common olive tree may become one of the most important health care remedies for the 21st century. Farmers and scientist have long known that the leaves of the tree seem to repel insects. In the 1800's doctors reported improvement in malaria patients after they boiled some Olive leaves and fed the resulting 'tea' to the malaria patients.

But it was the result of research by scientists at the Upjohn company in the late 1960's that proved it is effective against many viruses.

The scientists isolated calcium elenolate as the substance in Olive leaves that is antiviral. In 1969 The Journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy reported that calcium elenolateinhibited many viruses including parainfluenza and herpes.

Dr. Morton Walker, author of Natures Antibiotic: Olive Leaf Extract publishedby Kensington Books in 1997, states that the extract can also inactivate smallpox, plague, Epstein-Barr virus and hepatitis. In 2003 Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications pubished a study, "Anti-HIV activity of Olive leaf extract (OLE) and modulation of host cell gene expression by HIV-1 infection and OLE treatment" which showed the extract to be effective in high doses.

This natural product may become a treatment of choice for colds, flu and other viral infections.
