Radix Dipsaci Osteoporosis, Osteopenia treatment

Radix Dipsaci Osteoporosis, Ostepenia treatment herb.

Recent research from China shows that Radix Dipsaci offers a way to improve trabecular (inner) bone without pharmaceutical drugs. Although this herb has been used for centuries by practitioners in China, it is only recently that its effectiveness has been tested and proven by Western medical standards.

Note: The herb  is sometimes called Teasel root or just Dipsacus root.  (Teasel root is the name most often used in Europe and in North America.)

Radix Dipsaci is a summer root. Is is dug up during July and August. Then it is cut into slices and dried in the sun.

In Traditional Chinese medicine Radix Dipsaci Osteoporosis is used to:

  • Tonify the liver and kidneys (Remember that in Traditional Chinese Medicine the kidneys are seen as regulating bone density.)
  • Promote the circulation of blood and
  • Strengthening  bones and tendons

Scientific studies about Radix Dipsaci Osteoporosis

As you know, I always look for scientific studies to support the use of any natural or pharmaceutical treatments for Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. (Anyone can claim anything. But scientific tests/studies are the key to finding things that really work.) And several studies of Radix Dipsaci Osteoporosis,Osteopenia herb show that the herb improves trabecular bone - the inner bone that really counts in preventing fractures.

As early as 2007 there was a study: "The effect of crude extract from Radix Dipsaci on bone in mice". The results from this study showed that the consumption of Radix Dipsaci extract caused a 4.50% increase in bone volume/tissue volume ratio. And the trabecular bone increased by 11.82% in number of the rats!

That is an amazing result. I know of no pharmaceutical drug that is that effective. The researchers concluded: "Radix Dipsaci extract taken  orally increased bone density and altered bone histomorphology." Another study was published in 2009,  "The Osteoprotective effect of Radix Dipsaci extract in ovariectomized rats" by Liu ZG, Zhang R, Li c, Ma X, Liu L, Wang JP, Mei QB. These researchers treated rats with either Radix Dipsaci (RDD) RDD or Pyrola Herb (PHD) or Cynomorium songaricum decoction (CSD).  By the end of their work the researchers concluded that this "study provides evidence that Radix Dipsaci extract will have potential to be used for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis."
