Osteopenia definition; what does Osteopenia really mean?

Osteopenia definition. If you have received a diagnosis of Osteopenia it means that you have 'thin bones'. (Osteo means bone.) What does this mean to you and your health? If you do not increase your bone density and you keep losing bone, you will progress to Osteoporosis, (porous bone)  a more serious condition in which it is much more likely that you will suffer a fracture or even multiple small fractures eg. of your spine which could lead to a condition known as Kyphosis or Dowagers hump.

Why do you have Osteopenia?

If you have been diagnosed with Osteopenia, the first thing you may want to do is figure out why your bones are thinning. This is important.  Unless you know why, you can not correct whatever is causing your bone loss.

Sometimes thinning bones can be caused by your diet, by lack of activity or by a  dozen other things. Once you understand the individual Causes of your bone loss, you will be able to think about life style changes, supplements etc. - things you might do to help your body increase the work of your Osteoblasts (bone building cells) so you build stronger bones and can reverse your Osteopenia. You do not want to progress to the more serious condition of Osteoporosis.

If you have not do so, please read: Causes of Osteopenia before coming back to this page for more information.
