Osteopenia diagnosis: what it means and why it matters. Osteoporosis means that there is so much bone loss that they are actually porous. You can see open spaces in the bones. Osteopenia is a term created to show a 'little bone loss'....the bone loss is not so great as to make the bones 'porous' (that would be Osteoporosis).
If you have received an Osteopenia diagnosis, consider yourself lucky. You are now warned that you need to do something because is you continue to lose bone at the rate you have been losing it AND you are not building new bone at a faster rate, you are going to have porous bones. And that will leave you are greater risk for a fracture.
So the whole point about getting a bone density test it to learn how solid and strong our bones are. The whole point is to know where we are so that if we have already lost some bone, we can take steps to remedy that before we have a fracture because our bones are too weak to withstand sudden stress on them.
The good news is that with an Osteopenia diagnosis you have some 'advanced warning'. If you make a few changes now, you can stop losing bone too fast...you can start building new, strong bone - even over the next year. By the time you have your next bone density test, you could be back to 'normal bone density'.
Of course the question is, how? What can you do to rebuild bone after an Osteopenia diagnosis?

But there is more that you can do. Second, on your list of things to do, is learning what you can do to avoid any falls in the next year or so. Why?
Well, obviously if our bones are weaker, we could suffer a fracture if we fall. AND as we age, we lose a bit of our natural balance each year (why so many elders fall.)
