The word, Osteoporosis, means 'porous bone'. Porous bone is full of empty spaces where there should be solid bone. Porous bone is likely to fracture if when there is significant stress on the bone.
The use of 'penia' after Osteo (bone) indicates that there is a 'small bone loss'. The bones have lost some density but they are not yet 'porous', eg. with openings like a sieve.
Practical Meaning of Osteopenia. If you have received a diagnosis of Osteopenia, count yourself lucky. Of course the fact that you have lost some bone is not good news.
