Meaning of Osteopenia.

Meaning of Osteopenia.  Osteopenia is a word invented by the medical community for  bone loss that is less than what is found in full fledged Osteoporosis.

The word, Osteoporosis, means 'porous bone'. Porous bone is full of empty spaces where there should be solid bone. Porous bone is likely to fracture if when there is significant stress on the bone. 

The use of 'penia' after Osteo (bone) indicates that there is a 'small bone loss'. The bones have lost some density but they are not yet 'porous', eg. with openings like a sieve. 

Practical Meaning of Osteopenia. If you have received a diagnosis of Osteopenia, count yourself lucky. Of course the fact that you have lost some bone is not good news. But the fact that your bone are not yet Osteoporosic IS good news.  If you start right now rebuilding your bones, you should be able to be successful. You can bring your bones back to normal bone density and when you do, you will have reduced any likelihood you will suffer a fracture. Yes!
