Osteoporosis and Osteopenia herbs

Osteopenia herbs can increase bone density both for persons with Osteopenia (mild bone loss) and for those with the more serious diagnosis of Osteoporosis (signficant bone loss)

In some parts of the world, these herbs are the preferred treatment for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis. And since there is a signifcant body of scientific research about herbs that can build stronger bones, I include information about these herbs here.

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that it makes all this research available to us...and at no cost. I, for one, could not afford to subscribe to all the academic journals that publish studies about Osteoporosis, Osteopenia herbs.)  But the National Institute of Health web site offers a searchable database of health related articles that have been published in scientific journals throughout the world AND NIH site offers English translations for most of the articles they list.

When I started this site,  I was determined  to build a web site that only contains  science based information about reversing bone loss. That National Institute of Health web site with its scientific articles was the source I used when I was rebuilding my own bone density AND it is the source of all the information I share on this website.   (I also link to products that have been shown to build stronger bones, at the Osteopenia, Osteoporosis Products page of this site.

But I have steadfastly refused to list any product that does not have scientific studies to show its worth.  Why? It is easy for someone to make a claims about a product's ability to build stronger bones; it is another thing for a company to have the scientific studies that back up their claims. I do not want my readers wasting money buying products with unproven claims.

Still research shows that there are a number of herbs worth considering if you want to reverse your bone loss and I have listed many of them below.

Osteoporosis, Osteopenia herbs

The following Osteoporosis and Osteopenia herbs have been shown to be effective in reversing bone loss:

Amla - The scienfitic name is phyllanthus emblica. But this herb has acquired a great variety of names. It can be known as emblic, emblic myrobalan, myrobalan, Indian gooseberry, Malacca tree. The name amla comes from Sanskrit amalaki

Black cohosh whose scientific name is actaea racemosa, is a flowering plant  native to eastern North America from the South of Ontario, Canada to central Georgia, and west to Missouri and Arkansas in the United States.

Bushen - a powerful herb and should only be use in consultation with a competent herbalist and/or practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) because it can affect other aspects of the body besides bone building.

Chamomile - Yes, chamomile, so often used as a tea. There is a report of its uses on the National Institue of Health site: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2995283/

Er Zi Wan - is another formula from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It, like many TCM herbs has multiple uses and should only be used under the guidance of a competent practitioner.

Green Tea is now available in many grocery stores and tea shops. It is worth reading the page about it before making it part of your bone building program AND yes, it is worth paying a bit extra to get organicly grown Green tea.

Gushukang - another staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Herba Epimedii - also an herb of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Liuwei Dihuang Osteoporosis Osteopenia - effective treatment TCM

Marijuana (CBD) - used for many different conditions, including bone density

Red Clover - Yes, you may find it growing in your yard. But if you spray pesticides or find it along a road way where car exhaust might contaminate it,  you might think twice. Find a safer source.

Sage -  helps prevent bone resorption.

Teasel ( Radix Dipsaci is its technical name) An herb of many uses, Last summer I discovered that it could even be used for chronic lyme disease. BUT the key to using Teasel is to go s-l-o-w-l-y...one drop at a time, then two etc. or you may find yourself with a strong herx reaction that would be no fun.

In addition to the above list, I want to mention that CLA, which also reduces belly fat, has been shown to build bone.
